ST. LOUIS — Left fielder Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals departed Thursday night’s game with the San Diego Padres in the bottom of the sixth inning after being hit in the nose with a 95 mph fastball from Andrew Cashner.
With two outs and a 2-2 count, Holliday was struck with the pitch, which appeared to glance off the underside of his helmet first and then strike his nose. Holliday went down moments later and then got up off one knee, blood streaming from his nose.
The Cardinals announced that Holliday suffered a facial abrasion but no fractures.
After walking gingerly to first, Holliday was removed for a pinch-runner, pitcher Mike Leake. Holliday was replaced in the field by Jeremy Hazelbaker, who pinch-hit for starter Adam Wainwright earlier in the inning.
At the time of the injury, Holliday was 0-for-2. He’s tied for the team lead in homers with 17 and has knocked in a team-high 55 runs, batting .244.
