The Washington Nationals placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left wrist contusion.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 1.

Zimmerman, 31, had not played since last Sunday’s 3-1 loss to San Francisco, where he was struck by Giants closer Santiago Casilla’s pitch on his left wrist in the ninth inning.

Zimmerman is hitting .222 with 27 of his 67 hits going for extra bases in 80 games (14 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs). He has 38 RBIs.

In a corresponding roster move, the Nationals recalled outfielder Brian Goodwin from Triple-A Syracuse.

Goodwin, 25, joins Washington for the first major league assignment of his career. In 109 games for Syracuse, Goodwin is hitting .284 with 25 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 62 RBIs, 40 walks, 14 stolen bases and 35 runs scored.

Goodwin, an International League All-Star, ranked among league leaders in RBIs (second), doubles (sixth), and stolen bases (tied for 10th ) at the time of his promotion.

Goodwin, who can play all three outfield positions, is in his fifth full season in Washington’s system after being selected No. 34 overall in the 2011 draft out of Miami Dade Community College.
