Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor ended his holdout Wednesday after sitting out the first two games of the season in a contract dispute.
The Seahawks, who are 0-2 after losses to the St. Louis Rams and Green Bay Packers, said Chancellor arrived at the team facility on Wednesday morning. It was his first appearance since June’s minicamp and ended a holdout that lasted nearly eight weeks.
Chancellor, a three-time Pro Bowler, did not report to the team at the beginning of training camp, and Seattle played its first two games with Dion Bailey and DeShawn Shead starting at strong safety. Chancellor has been on the reserve/did not report list, so a roster move will have to be made to add him to the 53-man roster before he can play in a game. The team was granted a roster exemption, allowing him to return to practice immediately.
Chancellor was seeking an adjustment to his contract that would increase his 2015 salary.
—Josh McCown passed the final step in the NFL concussion protocol, clearing the quarterback to start Sunday for the Cleveland Browns.
Johnny Manziel started Week 2 in McCown’s place and got his first career victory, a 28-14 win over the Tennessee Titans. But head coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday that the Browns are going with McCown, a 36-year-old who has started for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chicago Bears in the past two seasons.
McCown left his first start with the Browns during Week 1 against the Jets after he was in a head-on collision at the goal line. McCown went airborne and lost the ball, leaving the game with a concussion, and was not cleared for Week 2.
—Browns offensive line coach Andy Moeller will not face charges after a woman accused him of assaulting her earlier this month at his home in Berea, Ohio.
Moeller, 51, was being investigated for an alleged assault of a Maryland woman who called 911 on Sept. 5 and said she was his fiancee. In a 911 call, the woman said Moeller “just tried to strangle me and beat me up and I’m leaving the premises and I’ve got to get out of here quickly.”
Tthe Browns suspended Moeller indefinitely after the incident and said in a statement Wednesday that the suspension “remains indefinite.”
—Richard Williamson, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and veteran NFL assistant, died this week after a brief illness. He was 74.
Williamson coached the Buccaneers in 1990 and 1991 and had a 4-15 record. He joined the original Carolina Panthers in 1995 and remained with the team through three head coaches until he retired after the 2009 season.
Williamson coached wide receivers for all but one of his 15 seasons with the Panthers. He began his coaching career at Alabama after playing for Bear Bryant and with Joe Namath. He went on to work in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs, Buccaneers, Cincinnati Bengals and Panthers.
—The Arizona Cardinals re-signed tight end Joseph Fauria to the practice squad.
The 6-foot-7, 262-pound Fauria was released from the team’s active roster on Saturday. He originally signed with the Cardinals on Sept. 10 after spending his first two NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions.
Fauria, 25, scored seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2013 but was limited last season with an ankle injury.
—One day after the Cardinals released Kerwynn Williams, the team re-signed the running back to its practice squad.
Williams played in the Cardinals’ 48-23 victory over the Chicago Bears last Sunday, rushing for 3 yards on one carry. Last season, Williams saw action in five games for the Cardinals, rushing for 246 yards on 53 carries and catching two passes for 11 yards.
—Philadelphia Eagles running back DeMarco Murray sustained a hamstring injury in practice on Wednesday and is questionable for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.
The severity of the injury isn’t known, but the Eagles said Murray was limited in practice and sent him for an MRI exam afterward. Murray, who won the NFL rushing title last season with the Dallas Cowboys, has rushed for only 11 yards on 21 carries in the first two games.
If Murray can’t play, Ryan Mathews, another offseason acquisition, probably would get the bulk of the carries, and Darren Sproles also would likely see playing time. Mathews has only four carries for 4 yards in two games.
