Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson hobbled off the field with a right knee injury Sunday night, and the team announced he would not return to the game against the Green Bay Packers.

Peterson ran up the middle for 5 yards late in the third quarter, and the tackler, Packers linebacker Kyle Fackrell, rolled onto Peterson’s right leg.

The carry was the long of the night for Peterson, who finished with 19 yards on 12 attempts. In the season opener against the Tennessee Titans, Peterson managed only 31 yards on 19 carries.

Coming into the Sunday night game, Peterson was nursing a minor ankle injury.

Peterson, 31, is coming off a season in which he led the NFL with 327 carries and 1,485 rushing yards while tying for first with 11 rushing touchdowns. He missed all but one game in 2014 after he reached a plea deal on a child-abuse charge.
