NEW YORK — One day after getting picked off to seal a loss to the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will undergo surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament in his left (non-throwing) thumb.

Fitzpatrick hinted at such a decision this week before he and coach Todd Bowles confirmed it following the Thursday night game, a 22-17 New York loss.

Both Bowles and Fitzpatrick expect the quarterback to play Nov. 22, when the Jets return to action with a road game against the Houston Texans.

Fitzpatrick was hurt Nov. 1 in a loss to the Oakland Raiders, but he returned to lead New York to a win Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars before playing Thursday against Buffalo.

The Jets have to hope the surgery allows Fitzpatrick to regain his pre-injury form. He completed 61.9 percent of his passes while throwing 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions before getting hurt, but he is 36 of 68 (52.9 percent) for 465 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in the two games in which he played through the ailment.

On Thursday, Fitzpatrick finished 15 of 34 for 193 with two touchdown passes and two interceptions.
