TORONTO — Marco Estrada pitched eight shutout innings, Ryan Goins doubled and homered, and the Toronto Blue Jays held on to defeat the New York Yankees 4-2 on Monday night.

Edwin Encarnacion had two RBIs for the Blue Jays (27-26) in the opener of a three-game series.

Brian McCann hit a two-run homer for the Yankees against left-handed reliever Aaron Loup in the ninth.

Right-hander Drew Storen finished the game to pick up his third save of the season despite allowing a double.

Estrada (3-2) held the Yankees (24-26) to three hits, three walks and no runs. The right-hander struck out six.

Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova (3-3) allowed eight hits, one walk and four runs in six-plus innings. He struck out four.

Right-hander Nick Goody replaced Nova after Kevin Pillar led off the seventh with a double. Goody finished the inning with Pillar stranded at third.

When Starlin Castro led off the eighth with a walk, it was the Yankees’ first base runner since Castro led off the fifth with a walk.

Estrada struck out the next two batters in the eighth before Aaron Hicks doubled Castro to third. It was the first Yankees hit since Carlos Beltran led off the fourth with a single. Estrada finished the eighth on a popout to shortstop by Jacoby Ellsbury, who started the game with a single.

Yankees left-hander Richard Bleier made his major-league debut when he replaced Goody with one out in the bottom of the eighth.

Left-hander Aaron Loup replaced Estrada to start the ninth.

Loup struck out Brett Gardner and then hit Beltran with a pitch. McCann followed with his seventh homer of the season, a blast to center.

Storen replaced Loup and gave up a double to Mark Teixeira. Castro flied out to right and Chase Headley struck out to end the game.

Josh Donaldson singled and Encarnacion doubled to give Toronto a first-inning run.

Toronto scored twice in the third.

Goins led off with a double, Jose Bautista walked and Donaldson grounded out to the catcher, moving the runners to second and third. Encarnacion’s grounder to shortstop scored one run and a double by Michael Saunders scored the other.

The Yankees had their first batter on base in the fourth and fifth innings on a single by Beltran and a walk to Castro, respectively. Each time Estrada induced a double-play grounder, first from Brian McCann and next from Didi Gregorius.

Goins led off the bottom of the fifth with his third homer of the season, slicing a drive to left that gave Toronto a 4-0 lead.
