Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who was scratched with a sore left foot Sunday, returned to the starting lineup against the Baltimore Orioles on Memorial Day.

The Red Sox slugger had six home runs in his previous nine games in Baltimore at Camden Yards. In the eighth inning, Ortiz belted his 14th home run of the season off rookie lefty Ashur Tolliver to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.

Boston went on to win, 7-2.

Ortiz was hit in the foot on a pitch from Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman on Saturday. X-rays came back negative.

According to Farrell, Ortiz fouled a pitch off the same spot on his left foot last week and the incident Saturday made the injury worse.

–The New York Yankees placed infielder/outfielder Dustin Ackley on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder dislocation.

The 28-year-old utility player was injured in Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Ackley hurt the shoulder sliding back to first on a pick-off try in the sixth inning.

Manager Joe Girardi said after Sunday’s game that Ackley’s shoulder “popped out.” Ackley stayed in Tampa for an MRI.

Ackley, 28, is batting .148 with four RBIs in 28 games this season.

The Yankees recalled infielder Rob Refsnyder from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Ackley’s roster spot. Refsnyder was hitting .368 with two home runs and three RBIs in his last 10 games.

–Miami second baseman Derek Dietrich sat out Monday’s game after getting hit in the back of the head by a foul ball while in the dugout on Sunday.

Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich was batting in the ninth inning against Braves reliever Ian Krol. Yelich fouled off Krol’s 1-2 offering, and the ball flew into the Marlins’ dugout.

The ball ricocheted against a wall in the dugout and struck Dietrich who laid motionless for a couple of minutes.

–Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said shortstop J.J. Hardy hopes to have a CAT scan by Friday and if all goes well he could resume baseball activities.

The 33-year-old Hardy sustained the injury on Sunday after he hit a foul ball off the foot during the fourth inning of a game against the Chicago White Sox.

Hardy, a two-time All-Star, was batting .244 with two home runs and seven RBIs this season. Defensively, he is one of four shortstops who has not made an error this year.

–Cleveland Indians starting right-hander Carlos Carrasco threw a bullpen session Monday and could be activated off the disabled later this week.

Manager Terry Francona said the Indians are “keeping the door open” for Carrasco to be activated, and, in all likelihood, start Friday’s game vs. Kansas City.

He has been sidelined with a strained hamstring since late April.

The return of Carrasco will be a welcome one. In four starts prior to getting injured he was 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, while holding opposing hitters to a .200 batting average.

He seems to be emerging into co-ace status with Corey Kluber.
