MLB roundup: Tavarez HR lifts Orioles over Yankees

Anuery Tavarez’s home run in the top of the ninth inning Saturday lifted the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-4 victory over the New York Yankees in Tampa, Fla.

Chris Johnson and Pedro Alvarez also belted homers for the Orioles, while Billy McKinney cranked a solo shot for the Yankees that tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth. C.C. Sabathia struck out five in four innings for New York.

Rays 3, Blue Jays 2

Jake Bauers’ two-run homer in the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie and led Tampa Bay to a win over Toronto in Dunedin, Fla. Dayron Varona added an RBI double for the Rays, who got four shutout innings and four strikeouts from Chase Whitley. Bauers’ homer was the only hit allowed over 3 2/3 innings by Blue Jays starter Mat Latos.

Mets 5, Cardinals 4

Xorge Carrillo’s RBI double in the top of the ninth led New York to a victory over St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla. Juan Lagares and Kevin Plawecki each cracked solo homers while Tim Tebow started in left field and went 1-for-3 for the Mets. Starter Michael Wacha gave up five hits and three runs over four innings with a walk and four strikeouts for the Cardinals.

Tigers (ss) 5, Marlins 4

Scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, a Detroit split squad edged Miami in Lakeland, Fla. Justin Verlander tossed five scoreless innings for the Tigers, allowing four hits and fanning four. Dan Straily whiffed six in five innings for the Marlins, although he did yield a solo homer to Alex Presley. Detroit’s J.D. Martinez left with a leg injury.

Astros 5, Nationals 4

Alejandro Garcia’s RBI single in the top of the ninth inning lifted Houston to a win over Washington in West Palm Beach, Fla. Grant Green cracked a solo homer for the Nationals to tie the game in the seventh, while Trea Turner and Bryce Harper also knocked in runs. Starter Charlie Morton fanned seven over four innings for the Astros.

Tigers (ss) 7, Braves 5

Alex Castellanos went 2-for-3 with three RBIs as a Detroit split squad knocked off Atlanta in Orlando, Fla. Jose Iglesias added two hits and an RBI for the Tigers, while Kurt Suzuki led the Braves’ 11-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Starter Bartolo Colon struggled in his 3 2/3 innings for Atlanta, giving up eight hits and six runs.

Pirates 13, Phillies 8

Eury Perez, John Jaso and Elias Diaz each homered as Pittsburgh prevailed in a slugfest in Clearwater, Fla. Jaso finished with four RBIs for the Pirates while Phil Gosselin added a two-run triple. Maikel Franco clubbed a grand slam for the Phillies, but starter Jeremy Hellickson was charged with nine hits and eight runs (five earned) in five innings.

Red Sox 12, Twins 5

Pablo Sandoval crushed a solo homer and a three-run shot as Boston outscored Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla. Mitch Moreland knocked in four runs for the Red Sox while Opening Day starter Rick Porcello was touched for nine hits and five runs in four innings. Brian Dozier had three hits and a run for the Twins.
