The Baltimore Orioles named Roger McDowell as their pitching coach and Alan Mills as their bullpen coach, the team announced Tuesday.
McDowell, 55, spent the past 11 seasons as the Atlanta Braves’ pitching coach. In that span (2006-16), the Braves pitching staff went 905-876 and ranked fourth in the majors with a 3.88 ERA.
Prior to joining the Braves, McDowell was a minor league pitching coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization with Triple-A Las Vegas (2004-05) and Class-A South Georgia (2002-03).
“They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” McDowell said, according to the Baltimore Sun. “That’s one of the things that I’ve always tried to maintain, caring about the individual, understanding them, knowing them, getting to know them and understanding the ups and downs of a major league season and having that guy in your corner.”
McDowell pitched 12 years in the majors and finished with a 70-70 record with a 3.30 ERA and 159 saves.
Mills, 50, spent the past five seasons as a pitching coach in the Orioles’ organization, including the last two seasons as the pitching coach with Double-A Bowie.
