Baltimore Orioles minor league infielder Ramon Ramirez was killed in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic on Saturday night.

Ramirez, 23, was riding with his girlfriend on the back of the motorcycle when they were struck by a vehicle, according to MASN. Ramirez’s girlfriend survived the crash and suffered a broken leg.

“Our entire organization is deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic death of Ramon Ramirez,” executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said in a statement. “As a member of the Orioles organization, Ramon worked tirelessly to make the most of his opportunity to play professional baseball. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and coaches as we mourn this unimaginable loss.”

Ramirez signed with the Orioles in 2014 as a non-drafted free agent. He played with three different minor-league clubs in 2015.
