Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was placed on the 10-day injury list Thursday with left knee irritation, the club announced.
The Red Sox will recall right-handed pitcher Marcus Walden from Triple-A Pawtucket before Friday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Pedroia, 35, started this season on the IL with left knee inflammation. He was reinstated on April 9, and appeared in six games with Boston, starting four games at second base and two as a designated hitter. He batted .100 (2-for-20) with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. A three-time World Series champion, Pedroia is in his 14th season with the Red Sox, the majors’ fifth-longest continuous tenure for any player with their current team.
Pedroia left Boston’s road game on Wednesday against the New York Yankees following the top of the second inning due to left knee discomfort.
“In the first swing of that at-bat, the one he fouled off to right field, he felt something weird,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after Wednesday’s game. “It was his knee. He finished the at-bat. He came up to me and was like I don’t (feel) right there (in the knee), so I decided to take him out. He’ll see a doctor (Thursday) and we’ll see where we’re at.”
Last season, Pedroia appeared in three games while missing most of the season due to left knee inflammation. He also underwent surgery on his left knee for a complete cartilage restoration after appearing in 105 games in 2017.
In five appearances with the Red Sox earlier this season, the 30-year-old Walden went 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA, picking up his first career victory in a 1-0 win over Arizona on April 7.
