Boston Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and returned to the active roster.
Eovaldi has been out since April 18, just five days before undergoing successful arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove loose bodies.
Eovaldi, 29, returns after a short rehab stint. He pitched one scoreless inning at Triple-A Pawtucket, striking out three and walking one.
The team previously announced he will pitch out of the bullpen upon his return.
To make room on the roster, the Red Sox optioned right-hander Ryan Weber to Pawtucket.
Eovaldi, who signed a four-year, $68 million contract in the offseason, has a 6.00 ERA with no decisions in four starts this season.
He last pitched on April 17 against the New York Yankees and gave up one unearned run and three hits over six innings. He didn’t experience any problems during the start, but he was unable to straighten his right arm the following day.
Eovaldi is 44-53 with a 4.21 ERA in 160 appearances (152 starts) for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-12), Miami Marlins (2012-14), Yankees (2015-16), Tampa Bay Rays (2018) and Red Sox (2018-19). He missed the 2017 season while recuperating from Tommy John surgery.
Weber, 28, appeared in eight games for the Red Sox, starting three. He is 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA in 24 innings.
