Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia exited Boston’s Wednesday road game against the New York Yankees following the top of the second inning due to left knee discomfort.
Pedroia, who flied out to right field in his second-inning at-bat, was replaced by Eduardo Nunez at second base.
“In the first swing of that at-bat, the one he fouled off to right field, he felt something weird,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “It was his knee. He finished the at-bat. He came up to me and was like I don’t (feel) right there (in the knee), so I decided to take him out. He’ll see a doctor tomorrow and we’ll see where we’re at. Like I said, he was also feeling ill, what’s going on right now. That’s why he took off. We’ll know more tomorrow.”
Last season, Pedroia appeared in three games while missing most of the season due to left knee inflammation. He also underwent surgery on his left knee for a complete cartilage restoration after appearing in 105 games in 2017.
The 35-year-old four-time All-Star and 2008 American League MVP was activated from the injured list last week following a short rehab assignment. He is 2-for-20 in six games this season.
“He has to be smart about it,” Cora said. “He understands where he’s at and how he felt. So (I’ve) gotta to do what I have to take care of my player.
“I was surprised that he came up to me and told me that, but at least he was honest, but we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. I really don’t know. He was down. I haven’t seen him like that. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and it’s something that he just got scared but we’ll know tomorrow.”
