Boston Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will undergo elbow surgery on Tuesday, The Athletic reported Monday.
Eovaldi’s surgery is to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, according to The Athletic. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.
The 29-year-old Eovaldi was placed on the 10-day injury list on Saturday. He has a 6.00 ERA in four starts this season.
Eovaldi pitched Wednesday against the New York Yankees and gave up one unearned run and three hits over six innings. He didn’t experience any problems during the start but he was unable to straighten his right arm the following day.
In the offseason, Eovaldi signed a four-year, $68 million contract with the Red Sox.
He has a history of arm issues. He has twice undergone Tommy John surgeries and he also had elbow surgery last season while he was with the Tampa Bay Rays and missed approximately two months.
Eovaldi is 44-53 with a 4.21 ERA in 160 major league appearances (152 starts) for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-12), Miami Marlins (2012-14), New York Yankees (2015-16), Rays (2018) and Red Sox (2018-19). He missed the 2017 season while recuperating from Tommy John surgery.
