The Boston Red Sox and left-hander David Price reached agreement on a seven-year, $217 million deal on Tuesday, according to The Boston Globe.
The reported deal would be the largest annual contract in history for a pitcher, topping Clayton Kershaw’s seven-year, $210 million package with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Price posted an 18-5 record with an American League-best 2.45 ERA last season with the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays.
The 30-year-old went to the Blue Jays at the trade deadline in July and posted a 9-1 record with a 2.30 ERA during the remainder of the regular season to help Toronto reach the postseason. But he struggled in the AL playoffs, going 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA in the Blue Jays’ first postseason action since 1993.
An AL Cy Young Award winner in 2012, Price pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays for six seasons before he was traded in 2014 to the Tigers, for whom he posted a 13-8 record in 32 starts during the regular season.
Price and Zack Greinke were considered the biggest catches available this year in the free agent market.
