The St. Louis Cardinals landed the impact bat they were searching for when they acquired All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for catcher Carson Kelly, right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver, infielder Andy Young and the team’s Compensation B selection in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Goldschmidt, 31, hit .290 with 33 home runs and 83 RBIs last season. He finished sixth in the National League Most Valuable Player voting last season.
The three-time Gold Glove award winner is a career .297 hitter over eight seasons. He’s also added 267 doubles and 209 career home runs and 710 RBIs.
Weaver. 25, went 7-11 with 121 strikeouts and a 4.96 ERA in 136 1/3 innings pitched last season.
Kelly is considered one of the top catching prospects in baseball, but his advancement is blocked by veteran Yadier Molina.
Young, an infielder who can play multiple positions, split time between Class A Advanced Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield last season.
