MLB Recaps: Morton’s outing helps Astros past Mets

Charlie Morton pitched three hitless innings, fanning four, and earned the win as the Houston Astros routed a New York split squad 12-2 on Wednesday in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Teoscar Hernandez and A.J. Reed belted homers for the Astros, and Yulieski Gurriel added a two-run double. Asdrubal Cabrera launched a solo homer for the Mets.

Braves 3, Phillies 2

Micah Johnson’s RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning snapped a tie and lifted Atlanta past Philadelphia in Kissimmee, Fla. Nick Markakis added a two-run double in the third for the Braves, which got one-hit pitching for three innings from starter Bartolo Colon. Jeremy Hellickson worked four innings for the Phillies, allowing five hits and two runs.

Orioles 6, Blue Jays 4

Craig Gentry and Seth Smith each clubbed homers as Baltimore beat Toronto in Sarasota, Fla. Lourdes Gurriel jacked a three-run homer for the Blue Jays that brought them within 5-4 in the seventh, but they got no closer. Wade Miley pitched three shutout innings to earn the victory for the Orioles, fanning three.

Cardinals 9, Nationals 3

Washington starter Stephen Strasburg was peppered for seven hits and six runs in two innings as St. Louis cruised in Jupiter, Fla. Michael Wacha fired three scoreless innings for the Cardinals, fanning three. Harrison Bader was 2-for-4 with a solo homer for St. Louis. Dexter Fowler and Aledmys Diaz each collected two hits and two runs.

Mets (ss) 8, Red Sox 7

Getting a game in the major league camp, Tim Tebow fanned twice and bounced into a run-scoring double play as a New York split squad outscored Boston in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Jay Bruce cracked a two-run homer for the Mets as they touched American League Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello for five hits and four runs in three-plus innings. Allen Craig belted a two-run shot for the Red Sox.
