WASHINGTON — Anthony Rendon went 6-for-6 with three home runs and a career-high 10 RBIs, and Matt Wieters had three hits, including two homers and four RBIs, as the first-place Washington Nationals crushed the New York Mets 23-5 on Sunday, salvaging the series finale in convincing fashion.
It was the first multi-homer game in the career of Rendon, who entered the day with five RBIs. He set a career high with six hits and lifted his average from .226 to .278. Washington hit a team-record seven homers.
Rendon had a two-run single in the first inning, a solo homer in the third, a three-run homer in the fourth, a three-run double in the fifth and a solo homer in the eighth off Kevin Plawecki, normally a catcher. The MLB record for RBIs in a game is 12, set by Jim Bottomley and Mark Whiten.
The Nationals are the first team in major-league history to score at least 14 runs five times in April. Ryan Zimmerman also had three hits for Washington, which set a franchise record (including Montreal) for runs in a game.
Mets ace starter Noah Syndergaard left his start in the second inning while pitching to Bryce Harper. Syndergaard immediately held up his right elbow after throwing a 2-2 pitch to Harper. He headed to New York for an MRI exam, according to a team spokesman, after suffering a possible right lat strain.
Indians 12, Mariners 4
CLEVELAND — Francisco Lindor had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs, and Michael Brantley capped an eight-run third inning with a home run as Cleveland collected 15 hits in support of starter Josh Tomlin (2-3).
Right-hander Chase De Jong (0-2) made his first major league start for the Mariners, and he gave up six runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Blue Jays 3, Rays 1
TORONTO — Jose Bautista tied the score with a double, Russell Martin drove in the go-ahead run with a single and Toronto used a three-run eighth inning to help win a series for the first time this season.
The Blue Jays also won two consecutive games for the first time this season.
J.P. Howell (1-1) allowed a walk in one-third of an inning to pick up the win.
Roberto Osuna pitched around an error by shortstop Ryan Goins and an infield single in the ninth for his third save of the season.
The Blue Jays lost starter Aaron Sanchez after one inning with what the club said was a split right middle finger nail.
Tigers 7, White Sox 3
DETROIT — Jim Adduci keyed a four-run fourth inning with an RBI double, Jose Iglesias had a two-run double and Justin Upton tagged a solo home run to help Detroit snap a four-game losing streak and end Chicago’s six-game winning streak.
Todd Frazier chased Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann (3-1) when he led off the sixth inning with his third home run of the season. Zimmermann gave up seven hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five.
Brewers 4, Braves 3
MILWAUKEE — Domingo Santana hit a solo home run and a three-run homer, and Matt Garza turned in his best start of the season to lead Milwaukee.
Garza allowed three runs on six hits through 6 2/3 innings after Atlanta scored 21 runs on 32 hits the previous two nights. Garza (1-0) earned his first victory in his third start after missing the first two weeks of the season with a strained groin.
Marlins 10, Pirates 3
MIAMI — Justin Bour went 4-for-5 with six RBIs to help Miami rally for a win. Bour, who fell a triple short of the cycle, capped his performance with a two-run homer in the seventh.
Bour, who entered the game with a .184 batting average, helped the Marlins break a four-game losing streak.
The Pirates had their four-game win streak snapped and missed completing their first road sweep of the Marlins since 1993.
Astros 7, Athletics 2
HOUSTON — Dallas Keuchel became the first pitcher in the majors to reach five victories on the season, carrying a shutout into the eighth inning, to lead Houston.
Keuchel (5-0) was one strike shy of twirling eight shutout innings, but Athletics shortstop Adam Rosales’ two-out single facilitated a pitching change. Rosales subsequently scored when first baseman Ryon Healy slapped a single to center field off Astros reliever Luke Gregerson, who limited the damage to one run.
Keuchel allowed three hits and two walks while striking out nine over 7 2/3 innings. It marked the fifth time in six starts that Keuchel has surrendered one earned run of less.
Reds 5, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS — Joey Votto singled with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to complete a Cincinnati comeback from a 4-0 deficit.
The Reds loaded the bases against Trevor Rosenthal with a walk, single and another walk before Votto’s one-out single let the Reds snap a four-game losing streak.
The Cardinals had built the lead with one run in the first, which scored on a wild pitch, and Matt Carpenter’s three-run double in the fifth.
Orioles 7, Yankees 4 (11 innings)
NEW YORK — Mark Trumbo hit the tie-breaking single with two outs in the top of the 11th inning as Baltimore blew a two-run lead in the ninth before getting the extra-inning win.
Trumbo gave the Orioles their second lead of the game when he grounded a clean single up the middle off Bryan Mitchell to put Baltimore ahead 5-4.
The Orioles were one out from a 4-2 win in the ninth before Didi Gregorius hit a two-run single off Donnie Hart to tie it.
Twins 7, Royals 5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Miguel Sano drove in five runs and Phil Hughes pitched effectively into the sixth inning to give Minnesota the win and hand Kansas City its ninth straight loss.
Sano hit a three-run homer in the third to erase an early 2-0 deficit.He added a run-scoring single in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth. It was his fourth straight multi-hit game to raise his average to .316.
Hughes (4-1) was charged with four runs on 10 hits, including a Lorenzo Cain home run, in 5 2/3 innings.
Angels 5, Rangers 2
ARLINGTON, Texas — Jefry Marte drove in three runs with a single and home run to lead Los Angeles.
Kole Calhoun hit a leadoff home run in the third inning for the Angels and Marte delivered a two-run single in the fifth. Marte’s homer was a solo shot in the ninth that capped the scoring.
Dodgers 5, Phillies 3
LOS ANGELES — Hyun-Jim Ryu won his first game since 2014, Justin Turner extended his major-league-leading hitting streak to 15 games with a 3-for-4 day, and Los Angeles finished a sweep of the series.
It was the sixth win in eight games for the Dodgers and a huge victory for Ryu, who suffered a shoulder injury and sat out the entire 2015 season. He rehabbed and returned in 2016 only to suffer an elbow injury in his only start, sidelining him again.
Sunday’s start was Ryu’s fifth of the season after going 0-4 with a 4.64 ERA in his first four. After allowing two hits and a walk in the first inning, he settled down and retired 15 of the next 18 Phillies, exiting with one out in the sixth.
Padres 5, Giants 2 (12 innings)
SAN FRANCISCO — Wil Myers hit a three-run home run in the 12th inning off George Kontos to give San Diego a comeback win.
The Giants led 2-0 entering the ninth, but San Francisco closer Mark Melancon gave up a two-run homer to pinch hitter Hector Sanchez that sent the game into extra innings.
Giants starting pitcher Ty Blach surrendered three hits in seven shutout innings.
