DETROIT — Justin Verlander pitched no-hit ball through five innings and allowed just two hits in the eight innings he worked while Justin Upton smacked a two-run home run to cap a four-run sixth that helped the Detroit Tigers end the Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory on Sunday.
Verlander (9-8) enabled the Tigers to end their six-game losing streak.
Dodgers newcomer Curtis Granderson broke up Verlander’s no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth inning when he lined a down-and-in 2-2 slider off the foul pole in right field for his 20th home run, which was his first homer with Los Angeles.
Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda (11-5) lost his perfect game bid when John Hicks led off the sixth with a line single to left center, and before the inning ended Detroit scored four for a 4-1 lead.
Rays 3, Mariners 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Kevin Kiermaier hit a leadoff home run and Adeiny Hechavarria added a two-run blast to lift Tampa Bay past Seattle.
The home runs were all the offense Rays starter Blake Snell (2-6) needed after having his best outing of the season.
Snell gave up two hits and struck out eight in seven innings to win his second consecutive start after failing to win in his first 14 starts this season.
Marlins 6, Mets 4
NEW YORK — Miami left-hander Adam Conley struck out a career-high 11 over seven strong innings and earned the win over New York.
The Marlins won two of three from the Mets and have won seven of their last nine overall. New York has lost seven of nine.
Conley (6-5) allowed just one run — a first-inning homer by Yoenis Cespedes — and three hits and two walks in improving to 3-1 with a 1.87 ERA in nine games (seven starts) against the Mets. He is particularly dominant at Citi Field, where Conley is now 3-0 in three starts while allowing just two runs in 19 innings over three starts.
Braves 8, Reds 1
ATLANTA — Rookie Sean Newcomb pitched five scoreless innings and Tyler Flowers clubbed a grand slam to give Atlanta the win over Cincinnati.
Newcomb (2-7) allowed five hits but permitted no runs in his five-inning stint. He walked five, struck out two and worked out of trouble in his final three innings, when the Reds stranded eight runners.
Flowers connected for his second career grand slam in the fifth inning, part of a six-run inning against reliever Drew Storen.
Angels 5, Orioles 4
BALTIMORE — Cameron Maybin delivered a tiebreaking, pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning and Los Angeles won two of the three games in the series.
Los Angeles has won nine of its past 11 games and maintains the second wild-card spot.
Kole Calhoun and Andrelton Simmons homered for the Angels, who went deep 11 times in the series.
Royals 7, Indians 4
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The bottom four in the Kansas City lineup — Jorge Bonifacio, Alcides Escobar, Cheslor Cuthbert and Cameron Gallagher — combined to go 9-for-14 with all seven RBIs, scored four runs, had a sacrifice fly and drew a walk to lead the team to victory.
Cuthbert homered and drove in three runs. Escobar extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games with two hits and three RBIs. Bonifacio had three hits, including a double, and scored twice. Gallagher added two singles, walked and drove in a run.
Gallagher, Bonifacio and Cuthbert did not have an at-bat in the first two games of the series.
Red Sox 5, Yankees 1
BOSTON — Jackie Bradley Jr. knocked in three runs on a pair of two-out hits as Boston took the rubber match of the three-game series, extending its lead over New York in the American League East to five games.
Rick Porcello (8-14) picked up his fourth straight win, bringing him to 4-4 since the All-Star break.
Sonny Gray (7-8) went five innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on seven hits with two walks in his fourth start as a Yankee.
Athletics 3, Astros 2
HOUSTON — Jharel Cotton snapped a personal five-start winless streak by pitching effectively into the seventh inning and Oakland salvaged the finale of their series against Houston.
Marwin Gonzalez clubbed his 21st home run to lead off the seventh for the Astros.
The Athletics scored twice against Astros right-hander Brad Peacock (10-2) in the first inning courtesy of two throwing errors on the same play.
Twins 12, Diamondbacks 5
MINNEAPOLIS — Eddie Rosario’s grand slam capped a nine-run first inning for Minnesota and Chris Gimenez was a triple away from the cycle in the Twins’ win over Arizona.
Brian Dozier hit his 25th homer and walked three times to help support Bartolo Colon as the 44-year-old right-hander became the 18th player in major league history to earn a victory against every team in the league.
Colon (5-10) coasted to his third win in seven starts for Minnesota after the Twins piled on against Arizona’s T.J. McFarland, who was making just his third major league start and first since July 1, 2014.
White Sox 3, Rangers 2
ARLINGTON, Texas — Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez pitched six shutout innings as Chicago slowed the Texas offense.
Gonzalez (7-10), who has now allowed two earned runs in his last 20 innings of work, limited Texas to four singles one night after the Rangers erupted for 17 runs and 20 hits.
The Rangers had the bases loaded with one out in both the second and third innings but came away with nothing. Texas left 10 runners on base in the game and was 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Cubs 6, Blue Jays 5 (10 innings)
CHICAGO — Alex Avila singled in two runs to cap a three-run 10th-inning rally and lead Chicago past Toronto.
The Cubs rebounded after Toronto had scored twice in the top the 10th to win their sixth game in their last eight contests.
Avila lined a hit to right with the bases loaded off Roberto Osunsa (3-4) to drive in Ben Zobrist and Javier Baez. The Cubs had cut it to 5-4 when Kyle Schwarber came home from third on wild pitch. Osuna blew his eighth save in 41 chances.
Phillies 5, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO — Pedro Florimon capped an eventful day with a tie-breaking, two-run single in the eighth inning, sending Philadelphia to a victory and a split of the four-game series.
The Phillies and Giants began the series as the two losingest teams in baseball, and finished it that way as well after Philadelphia won Saturday and Sunday to capture the season series 4-3.
The loss formally eliminated the Giants from contention in the National League West.
Brewers 8, Rockies 4
DENVER — Jesus Aguilar continued his power surge by hitting two home runs for Milwaukee, which won the rubber game of the series and moved closer in the wild-card hunt.
Brewers starter Chase Anderson (7-2) gave up two hits and one first-inning run in five innings in his first start for Milwaukee since he sustained a strained left oblique on June 28.
Aguilar tied the game at 1 with a homer in the second inning and then belted a two-run shot to center in the seventh, a 441-foot blast that put the Brewers ahead 5-1.
