MLB Spring Recaps: Yankees win on 3-run homer

Yankees 4, Orioles 1

Thairo Estrada cracked a tiebreaking three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Monday as the New York Yankees recorded a win over the Baltimore Orioles in a spring training game at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla. Jonathan Schoop homered for Baltimore’s only run. Greg Bird doubled twice in three at-bats for New York.

Cardinals (ss) 7, Red Sox 2

Jose Martinez belted a pair of two-run homers as a split squad of Cardinals won in Fort Myers, Fla. Mitch Moreland went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Red Sox. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny saw his son, Tate, pinch-run for the Red Sox in the fifth inning and then play in right field, striking out in his lone at-bat.

Rays 7, Phillies 2

Corey Dickerson and Shane Peterson each drilled two-run homers as the Rays prevailed in Clearwater, Fla. Maikel Franco cracked a solo homer for the Phillies and also drove in their other run with a single. Casey Gillaspie added a two-run double for Tampa Bay.

Cardinals (ss) 5, Nationals 4

Nick Martini’s three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted a split squad of Cardinals to a win in Jupiter, Fla. Trea Turner belted a solo homer for the Nationals, while Luke Voit did the same for the Cardinals. Starter Tanner Roark pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and whiffing four.

Pirates 2, Blue Jays 1

Eric Wood scored on a balk in the top of the sixth inning for the eventual winning run as the Pirates prevailed in Dunedin, Fla. Marcus Stroman pitched two perfect innings for the Blue Jays, striking out three. Jose Bautista knocked in Toronto’s only run with a single in the sixth inning.

Astros 5, Mets 2

A four-run ninth inning led the Astros to a win in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Anibal Sierra’s bases-loaded walk snapped a 2-2 tie and Tony Kemp added a two-run single. Asdrubal Cabrera and Wilmer Flores cracked solo homers for the Mets.

Tigers 10, Braves 7

The Tigers scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pick up a win in Lakeland, Fla. Miguel Gonzalez’s two-run single put the Tigers ahead for good, and Dominic Ficociello capped the outburst with a two-run double. Dansby Swanson went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for the Braves, while Freddie Freeman was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Twins 9, Marlins 6

Byung Ho Park belted a two-run homer as the Twins earned a victory in Fort Myers, Fla. Danny Santana added a two-run single and Robbie Grossman knocked in two with a double in a five-run second inning. Tyler Moore swatted a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Marlins.

Royals 14, Mariners 3 (7)

Paolo Orlando, Salvador Perez and Peter O’Brien each homered as the Royals routed the Mariners in Peoria, Ariz., in a game shortened to seven innings. Perez also added a two-run double as Kansas City finished with 14 hits. Jean Segura homered for Seattle.
