Spring Scores: Upton homers twice for Tigers

Upton hit his first two home runs of the spring for the Detroit Tigers in a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday in Clearwater, Fla.

Upton, who signed as a free agent in January, smacked a bases-empty homer in the first inning and then added a second solo shot in the sixth. Ryan Howard went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Phillies.

Giants 5, Cubs 2

Matt Duffy went 3 for 4 with a homer and three runs scored to help Jeff Samardzija and San Francisco beat Chicago in Mesa, Ariz. Samardzija set down the first 11 batters he faced and gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, including a solo homer to Addison Russell in the sixth.

Reds 7, Indians 4

Eugenio Suarez homered and Zack Cozart had a two-run double to lead a Cincinnati split squad past Cleveland in Goodyear, Ariz. Yan Gomes, Mike Napoli and Carlos Santana hit home runs for the Indians.

Angels 9, Padres 8

Albert Pujols and Kole Calhoun homered, Mike Trout drove in a run and Ji-Man Choi had two RBIs for Los Angeles against a San Diego split squad in Tempe, Ariz. Angels starter Andrew Heaney gave up two runs and six hits and had seven strikeouts in five innings.

Orioles 16, Red Sox 8

Manny Machado and Chris Davis homered in a six-run sixth inning against Roenis Elias and J.J. Hardy also went deep for Baltimore against Boston in Sarasota, Fla. Audry Perez contributed a three-run homer and Mark Trumbo added three RBIs for the Orioles, and Jackie Bradley Jr. socked a two-run homer for the Red Sox.

Twins 3, Pirates 0

Kyle Gibson gave up three hits and struck out eight in six innings and Trevor Plouffe had two hits and two RBI for Minnesota against a Pittsburgh split squad in Fort Myers, Fla. Cory Luebke, who worked one scoreless inning for the Pirates, had not pitched in the majors since 2012 with San Diego because of injuries that included two Tommy John surgeries.

Nationals 7, Cardinals 0

Washington used five St. Louis errors and a home run by Ryan Zimmerman in its shutout in Jupiter, Fla. Tanner Roark gave up six hits in five innings.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3

Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira had RBIs in the sixth inning and New York beat Toronto in Dunedin, Fla. Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell gave up one hit and had four strikeouts in four innings.

Reds 9, White Sox 7

Ivan DeJesus and Adam Duvall hit three-run homers off Carlos Rondon to carry a Cincinnati split squad past a Chicago split squad in Glendale, Ariz.

Royals 5, Athletics 2

Kansas City struck for four runs in the first inning and defeated Oakland in Surprise, Ariz. Reymond Fuentes had a two-run single in the first and the Royals added two runs on bases-loaded walks.

Diamondbacks 7, Brewers 7

Brandon Drury and Paul Goldschmidt hit home runs and Arizona’s game against Milwaukee ended in a tie in Phoenix after the Brewers rallied for four runs in the ninth inning. The big blow in the final inning was a three-run homer by Manny Pina. Jake Lamb contributed an RBI triple for the Diamondbacks and Jonathan Lucroy homered for the Brewers.

Mariners 7, Dodgers 6

Kyle Seager had two doubles and drove in three runs, Ketel Marte hit an inside-the-park home run and Kyle Seager contributed three RBIs and two doubles for Seattle against a Los Angeles split squad in Peoria, Ariz. Seth Smith added a home run for the Mariners.

Rockies 8, Rangers 6

Rookie shortstop Trevor Story continued his hot hitting with two doubles and his fifth home run of the spring as Colorado beat Texas in Scottsdale, Ariz. Story is batting .381 in spring training. Nolan Arenado and Brandon Barnes also homered for the Rockies.
