Detroit Tigers left-hander Matt Moore underwent season-ending surgery on his right knee on Wednesday, manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters.

Moore was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus, but apparently more significant damage was discovered.

“All I’m instructed to tell you guys is they had the surgery, they fixed it, but he’s definitely going to be out for the year,” Gardenhire said. “It’s going to be a long procedure getting back.”

Prior to the surgery, Moore and the Tigers were hopeful he would return as soon as four to six weeks after surgery.

“I’m more concerned with Matt Moore,” Gardenhire said. “He was throwing the ball really well. This was a blow for him and our ballclub, but I’m more worried about the guy than anything else.

“This guy wants to pitch. He was making a great comeback with us, throwing the ball really well, had a great spring and we were excited. Now, he’s going to miss a season, which, for him and his family, it’s very frustrating.”

Moore was injured when he landed awkwardly while trying to field a comebacker on April 6 against the Kansas City Royals.

The 29-year-old Moore joined the Tigers in the offseason when he signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

Moore pitched 10 shutout innings in his two starts with Detroit. He allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out nine.

Moore is 54-56 with a 4.91 ERA in 181 career appearances (151 starts) with the Tampa Bay Rays (2011-16), San Francisco Giants (2016-17), Texas Rangers (2018) and Tigers.
