The San Diego Padres landed arguably the top free agent available when former Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer agreed to an eight-year contract on Saturday night. The details of the deal have not been disclosed, but it is reportedly worth between $140-150 million with an opt-out after five years.
Hosmer, 28, played in a career-high 162 games for Kansas City last season and hit .318 with 31 doubles, a triple, 25 homers and 94 RBIs. He set a career-high in OPS (.882) and matched his career high in runs scored (98).
Hosmer, who helped lead the Royals to the World Series title in 2015, is a four-time Gold Glove Award winner and earned the All-Star Game MVP award in his lone appearance in the Midsummer Classic in 2016.
Over his seven-year career in the Majors, Hosmer owns a .284 average with 206 doubles, 16 triples, 127 home runs and 566 RBIs. He has 1,132 hits, 60 stolen bases, 547 runs scored and an OPS of .781.
