Don Mattingly is spending the week in Indiana after interviewing with the Miami Marlins.

“It really did,” Mattingly said. “As we got into discussion, as we kept talking, it just felt like it was a clear path. It was the best thing for me at the moment. It was the best thing for them. I’m grateful for the opportunity I had.”

Mattingly said change is sometimes the right thing, and was pleased with the way players responded in the regular season. He understood a different direction was best based on the playoffs not working out as they could have.

“The momentum was moving toward a nice mutual agreement that this was the best for both guys,” Mattingly said.

Mattingly said he was not offered a job with the Marlins and classified talks with the team as casual discussions back and forth. Even if he would be offered the job, Mattingly said no announcement would be made during the World Series.

“There’s a timeframe there that you have to weigh anyway,” Mattingly said.

Mattingly said it’s a sure thing Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke will opt out of his contract next month and believes outfield Yasiel Puig is hitting a critical juncture in his career.
“I think at a crossroads,” Mattingly said. “Teams are going to gear up for you, figure out how to get you out. I think he’s going to have to make some adjustments. Obviously the talent is there, but he’s going to need to make some adjustments.”
