Brewers’ starters in a ‘funk’

CLEVELAND — In several recent games, the Milwaukee Brewers’ starting pitchers have been starting games, but they haven’t stuck around very long. It happened again Wednesday night in a 6-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians. In losing both games of their brief two-game series in Cleveland, the Brewers got very little from their starting pitchers.

In the two losses, right-handers Wily Peralta and Jimmy Nelson combined to pitch a total of just six innings and had a 10.50 ERA. In the two games Peralta and Nelson gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits and 10 walks in just six innings.

Peralta pitched just 2 2/3 innings in an 11-6 loss Tuesday. Wednesday night, Nelson pitched 3 1/3 innings in another loss. Neither pitcher was very effective, and both pitchers were gone so early that it put a heavy burden on the Milwaukee bullpen.

“It seems like we haven’t had a starter go six innings in about a week,” said Brewers manager Craig Counsell. “We’re getting behind early in games and making it really tough on our offense.”

That’s what happened in the two games in Cleveland. On Tuesday, the Brewers were losing 9-2 after five innings, and on Wednesday, they were down 5-2 after five.

“I don’t know what it is. Our pitchers just seem to be in a funk right now,” said Counsell.
