New York Mets manager Terry Collins resigned his post after Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Collins said he will remain with the organization in a yet-to-be-determined role.

The 68-year-old Collins has been the subject of speculation over whether or not he would be back, as his two-year contract was expiring. He guided the team to the 2015 World Series — losing to the Kansas City Royals — but the Mets lost in the wild-card game last season and were a disappointing 70-92 this season.

Collins had a 551-583 record in seven seasons with the Mets. Overall, he was 995-1,017 in 13 seasons, including stints with the Houston Astros (1994-96) and the then-Anaheim Angels (1997-99).

–Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer, who left his start in the fourth inning Saturday night, said he is not sure if the hamstring injury will keep him from making a start in the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs.

The series begins Friday at Nationals Park.

Scherzer was the National League Cy Young winner last year and threw two no-hitters in 2015 for the Nationals. This year, he is 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA in 31 starts with 268 strikeouts in 200 2/3 innings.

–Andrew McCutchen was batting third and playing center field for Pittsburgh in what could be his last game with the Pirates, who ended the season against the Washington Nationals.

McCutchen, 30, who did not play Saturday due to a sore foot, was the 11th overall pick by the Pirates out of his Florida high school in 2005. He made his big league debut with Pittsburgh in 2009 and was the National League MVP in 2013.

The right-handed hitter was the subject of trade rumors last winter and that could happen again this offseason.

The Pirates finished 75-87 with McCutchen hitting .279 with 28 homers and 88 RBIs after a slow start.

–NEW YORK — The New York Yankees announced that they will significantly expand protective netting at Yankee Stadium next season and their spring training complex in Tampa, Fla.

The Yankees did not reveal specific plans but in a statement issued to the media and read by public address announcer Paul Olden after the bottom of the third inning.

The announcement was made 11 days after a young girl was struck by a line drive from New York third baseman Todd Frazier during the fifth inning of a game against the Minnesota Twins.
