The New York Yankees and closer Aroldis Chapman agreed to a one-year, $11.325 million contract on Friday to avoid salary arbitration.
Chapman, who was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in the offseason, had requested $13.1 million in arbitration. The Yankees countered by offering $9 million.
The left-handed Chapman was 4-4 with a 1.63 ERA and 33 saves for the Reds last season. He struck out 116 in 66 1/3 innings.
Chapman, 27, remains under investigation by Major League Baseball for a possible violation under the new domestic abuse policy. He was involved in an incident in late October in South Florida in which he was accused of choking his girlfriend and firing eight gun shots in his garage.
Prosecutors declined to file charges but Chapman still could face discipline from MLB.
