The New York Yankees are running low on outfielders so they worked out a deal to acquire Cameron Maybin from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, according to multiple reports.
It wasn’t immediately known what New York gave up to land the 32-year-old Maybin, who was batting .216 with no homers and five RBIs in 14 games at Triple-A Columbus.
Maybin was released by the San Francisco Giants last month. He has a .254 career average with 60 homers, 315 RBIs and 174 steals in 12 seasons with seven teams since reaching the majors in 2007.
The Yankees made the move after placing a fourth outfielder — Clint Frazier — on the 10-day injured list. He joins Aaron Judge (oblique), Giancarlo Stanton (biceps) and Aaron Hicks (back).
The New York Yankees placed Frazier on the IL after an MRI exam revealed a partial tear in his left ankle.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone made the announcement after Wednesday night’s victory in Anaheim, telling reporters there’s “enough in there” to shut down Frazier.
“The good news is we feel like it will be short. [Doctors] feel like it’s a 10-14-day thing. Maybe a little less. So we don’t feel like it’s a long thing,” Boone said, adding that Frazier “feels like he could play or is close to playing.”
Frazier injured the ankle Monday night against the Angels when he rolled it getting back to second base on a pickoff attempt.
The Yankees recalled right-handed reliever Joe Harvey to take Frazier’s spot on the roster.
Frazier was hitting .324 with six homers and 17 RBIs since being called up for Stanton, who Boone said has hit a snag in his recovery from a biceps strain. Though the arm has healed, Boone said Stanton has encountered a “residual” left shoulder problem.
Boone said Stanton had a cortisone shot earlier this week.
“He’s in Day 2 or 3 of not swinging,” Boone said. “We figured now while he’s down coming back from [the biceps injury], let’s make sure to treat this as best we can so it doesn’t become a lingering issue if we can help it.”
The news on Frazier and Stanton came the same day the club activated catcher Gary Sanchez from his stint on the IL.
