Slugger Chris Carter and the New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal on Tuesday, according to published reports.
Carter still must pass a physical for the deal to become official.
Carter led the National League in homers last season when he clubbed 41 homers for the Milwaukee Brewers. He also drove in a career-best 94 runs but batted just .222.
Milwaukee didn’t tender Carter a contract after the season and that made him a free agent.
The 30-year-old first baseman didn’t attract much interest on the free-agent market due to his propensity for striking out. He fanned a major-league-leading 206 times last season to mark the fourth straight season in which he struck out more than 150 times.
Carter also led the majors in strikeouts in 2013 when he fanned 212 times for the Houston Astros. He smacked 90 homers in three seasons with Houston (2013-15) before joining Milwaukee.
Carter, who began his career with the Oakland Athletics, has 150 career homers and 875 strikeouts since breaking into the majors in 2010. His career batting average is .218.
