Alex Rodriguez deposited the second pitch thrown to him this spring over the fence for a two-run homer, but a Philadelphia Phillies split squad defeated the New York Yankees 13-4 on Thursday in Tampa, Fla. Rodriguez also struck out and walked in his spring debut, and Maikel Franco hit a bases-empty homer for the Phillies.

Dodgers 6, White Sox 1

Clayton Kershaw threw two scoreless innings in his spring debut, Yasiel Puig and Yasmani Grandal had run-scoring singles and Alex Guerrero homered to lead Los Angeles past Chicago in Glendale, Ariz. Dave Roberts made his debut as Dodgers manager and announced that projected starting pitcher Brett Anderson will miss three to five months because of back surgery.

Brewers 2, Cubs 1

Chase Anderson made his spring debut with two scoreless innings, Jonathan Lucroy had an RBI single and Jonathan Villar tripled in the first inning to help a Milwaukee split squad defeat Chicago. Miguel Montero collected two of the Cubs’ seven hits.

Rays 10, Orioles 3

Corey Dickerson belted a long two-run homer, Desmond Jennings had two run-scoring doubles and Brandon Guyer contributed three hits, including home run, to help Tampa Bay defeat Baltimore in Port Charlotte, Fla. Miguel Gonzales gave up Dickerson’s homer and seven runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Tigers 8, Braves 2

Victor Martinez homered for the second time in spring training games and Ian Kinsler delivered a three-run double in the third inning to boost Detroit over Atlanta in Kissimmee, Fla. Freddie Freeman also homered and Martinez added an RBI single in the first inning.

Nationals 9, Mets 4

Washington struck quickly, scoring four runs in the first inning against New York in Viera, Fla. Two of the first-inning runs resulted from Anthony Rendon’s single and one of those was scored by Daniel Murphy, facing his former team for the first time. Nationals starter Max Scherzer gave up one hit in two innings and Trea Turner homered for Washington.

Cardinals 4, Marlins 3

Brandon Moss and Carlos Peguero hit back-to-back doubles in the second inning and Tyler Lyons allowed one run in three innings to lead St. Louis past Miami in Jupiter, Fla. Marcell Ozuna homered off Lyons and Adeiny Hechavarria had two hits for the Marlins.

Blue Jays 10, Pirates 8

A four-run second inning propelled Toronto past Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla. Michael Saunders had a two-run single in the second and Gavin Floyd gave up one run in two innings. Justin Smoak homered for the Blue Jays and Mike Morse produced an RBI double for the Pirates in the first inning.

Nationals 3, Phillies 2

Doug Fister collected four strikeouts in two shutout innings in his Houston debut, George Springer had two hits and Matt Duffy homered as the Astros defeated a Philadelphia split squad in Clearwater, Fla. Fister, who signed with the Astros in the offseason after two years with Washington, escaped the first inning by striking out the final two batters.

Reds 9, Indians 1

Cincinnati jumped on Cleveland early with a sacrifice fly from Brandon Phillips and a two-run single from Adam Duvall in the first inning against Indians starter Danny Salazar. Jay Bruce’s double off Bryan Shaw began a five-run sixth inning for the Reds.

Rangers 10, Royals 0

Joey Gallo had an RBI, Ryan Rua doubled in two runs in the fourth, Brett Nicholas hit a two-run homer in the eighth and James Jones added a homer in a four-run ninth to power Texas past Kansas City in Surprise, Ariz. Royals starter Edinson Volquez gave up one run in the first inning and Texas’ Derek Holland allowed three hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.
