Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Nick Burdi was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, one day after suffering a horrific-looking arm injury during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Burdi is listed by the Pirates as suffering from right elbow and biceps pain. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Burdi didn’t break any bones while throwing the pitch that left him laying on the mound in agony.

The 26-year-old fired a fastball to Arizona’s Jarrod Dyson in the eighth inning on Monday night and collapsed to the ground in major anguish, holding his right biceps. The intense pain left him crying on the mound as trainers attended to him.

Burdi is in the process of receiving a second opinion but the initial prognosis could mean he won’t require surgery.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle declined to discuss where things stand with Burdi.

“I’m not going to get caught up in the initial diagnosis yet. I want to let this thing play out,” Hurdle told reporters prior to Tuesday’s game. “A lot of people like to get information out first. I’m a big fan of getting information out that’s correct and accurate. We’ll just wait and see, man.

“We’re hoping for the best. A lot of thoughts and prayers going his way. We’ll wait and see what happens.”

Burdi wasn’t available for comment on Tuesday.

Burdi is 2-1 with a 9.35 ERA in 11 appearances this season but he has struck out 17 in just 8 2/3 innings.

He missed most of last year after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017.

Pittsburgh recalled left-hander Steven Brault from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Brault was sent down by the Pirates on Monday. He is 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in two appearances.
