The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Tyler O’Neill and right-handed reliever Mike Mayers on the injured list Tuesday, one day after both players were injured during a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
O’Neill suffered an ulnar nerve subluxation to his right elbow after making a throw home from center field in the bottom of the second inning on Monday. He was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the top of the third inning.
Mayers, 27, suffered a lat strain in his pitching shoulder. He felt cramping just before Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich blasted a three-run homer off of him in the sixth inning.
St. Louis also recalled infielder/outfielder Yairo Munoz and right-handers Giovanny Gallegos and Ryan Helsley from Triple-A Memphis. Infielder/outfielder Drew Robinson was optioned to the same club.
O’Neill, 23, was batting .286 with one homer and four RBIs in 14 games, while Mayers was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in eight appearances. Robinson, 26, is 0-for-6 in four games with the Cardinals and has a .229 average with no homers and two RBIs in nine games at Memphis.
Munoz, 24, is batting .231 with a homer and two RBIs in three games at Memphis. He was 1-for-4 in four games with the Cardinals earlier this season.
Gallegos, 27, went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in two games with St. Louis earlier this season. He tossed one scoreless inning for Memphis.
Helsley is looking to make his major league debut. The 24-year-old has a 3.86 ERA and no decisions in two starts at Memphis.
