49ers unsettled on starting quarterback against Raiders

The San Francisco 49ers don’t know who their starting quarterback will be Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders in Santa Clara, Calif.

It may come down to a game-time decision.

C.J. Beathard became the starting quarterback after Jimmy Garoppolo was lost for the season with a knee injury. But Beathard has been out of practice this week with a wrist injury and is listed as questionable for the game.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Thursday morning that Beathard has about a 50-50 chance of playing. The 49ers announced Thursday afternoon that Tom Savage, the team’s No. 3 quarterback, has been waived, which suggests that Beathard will at least be active for the game against Oakland.

If Beathard cannot play, Nick Mullens would get the start. Mullens joined the 49ers last year as an undrafted free agent, and he had been on the practice squad until he was called up to the active roster when Garoppolo was injured. Mullens has never played in an NFL regular-season game.

The only other quarterback that had been on the 49ers’ roster was the recently signed Savage. He played for the Houston Texans last season, and went 1-6 as a starter, while throwing five touchdown passes and six interceptions for the 2017 season. The 49ers waived him Thursday.

The 49ers are 0-5 with Beathard as their starter this season and 1-9 over two seasons. He has completed 60.4 percent pf his passes this season with eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions.
