–First-round draft pick D.J. Moore had a rough outing at times at Washington, particularly because of the rookie receiver’s two fumbles.

“Through experience, you’ll learn,” head coach Ron Rivera said, noting there are times when young players have to change gears. “Knowing when you’re surrounded, you’ve got to know to protect the football.”

Moore’s penchant for wanting to make more of each play is a good trait, but it has to be reeled in at times.

“In college football, he probably broke a lot of those plays,” Rivera said.

The plan is to keep Moore on the field as much as possible in the base offense and on special teams, Rivera said. That’s the best way for Moore to maintain confidence, the coach said.

–The Panthers were hit with eight penalties in the Washington game. That was uncharacteristic for a Ron Rivera-coached team.

“That’s just unfortunate as far as discipline is concerned,” Rivera said.

Carolina thrived on limiting those types of mistakes a year ago and had been pretty solid in that category this season. It’s a talking point for Rivera.

“Last year, we were the least-penalized team,” he said.

–Wide receiver Devin Funchess has 19 career touchdown receptions. That’s tied for fifth in franchise history, matching the total held by Ted Ginn Jr.

“Devin made plays that he’s more than capable of making,” head coach Ron Rivera said. “When guys like that perform and give you opportunity, you can win.”

It’s still a matter of consistency for Funchess. Rivera points out that the receiver’s big-play capabilities can’t be ignored. He has displayed those, including last year against the Detroit Lions.

Quarterback Cam Newton said it’s important to continue to give Funchess chances because of his ability to make game-turning plays.

BY THE NUMBERS: 8 – That’s the number of times QB Cam Newton has been sacked this season. That ties for the fewest sacks given up through five games in franchise history.
