Quarterback Johnny Manziel has no structural damage in his sore right elbow, but he will sit out the Cleveland Browns’ third preseason game on Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their exhibition finale against the Chicago Bears.

Head coach Mike Pettine said the Browns didn’t want to risk aggravating the elbow by playing Manziel in either game. Their preseason schedule ends next Thursday against the Bears.

Manziel, beginning his second season in Cleveland, was scheduled to play against the Buccaneers’ starters in the second quarter on Saturday night and for a half against the Bears next week.

“He’ll lose out on all that real game experience, but we’re very pleased with where he is,” Pettine said.

On Wednesday, Manziel had an MRI on his elbow and the exam revealed no damage.

In nine possessions in two preseason games, Manziel had one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown. He completed 17-of-29 passes (58.6 percent) for 160 yards with no interceptions.

Pettine isn’t certain when Manziel will be cleared to throw. He’s leaving the decision up to the doctors and trainers.

“I think he’s upset that he’s not out there,” Pettine said. “He’s upset it got to this point.”

Manziel’s injury solidifies Josh McCown’s standing as the Browns’ starting quarterback for the season opener on Sept. 13 against the New York Jets.
