BALZER'S H-BOMB

Denver to be H-Bombed by Oakland

At least, we are consistent. The H-Bomb and the Saints, I mean. It looked like New Orleans would have its first win of the season Sunday when the Saints took a lead on the Chiefs. But the lead evaporated, and the Saints fell to 0-3.

That is also my record for the H-Bomb, in which I “drop the bomb” on a favorite that is giving at least 6½ points. It appeared I was in good shape when the Rams entered the fourth quarter trailing 10-6 to the Bears. But Chicago kicked a field goal then had an interception return for a touchdown that gave them a 20-6 lead. Game over.

As it turns out, of the other three eligible games, any other would have produced a win, as the Chiefs and Vikings won outright over New Orleans and San Francisco, respectively, while Tampa Bay barely covered the 7-point spread in a 16-10 loss to Dallas. After three weeks, of 14 eligible games, the underdogs have covered in nine and won four outright.

Now, it’s Week 4, and I’m desperate for a victory. Several of the games seem promising. All are home teams: Baltimore 13 over Cleveland; Atlanta 7 over Carolina; Houston 12 over Tennessee; Denver 6½ over Oakland; and Green Bay 7½ over New Orleans.

Cleveland is intriguing on a short week for both teams. You’d think New Orleans should cover in Green Bay, but the Packers are angry and the Saints can’t stop anyone.

So it is that the bomb is dropped on Denver. Or, in other words, I like Oakland with the points.
