While the Colin Kaepernick-Denver saga drags on, Broncos fans learned one thing on Thursday morning: The team plans to select a quarterback in this year’s draft.
Coach Gary Kubiak told an audience at a Boy Scouts of America breakfast that regardless of what happens with Kaepernick, the team is focusing on quarterbacks currently on the roster — Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian and adding another via the draft.
“The biggest thing is we got to stay focused on the guys on our team right now,” Kubiak said. “We’re very excited. Mark and we know those guys are up there throwing in California, so that’s exciting. Trevor (Siemian), a fine young player. So we’re focused on those two and getting ready to go here in a couple of weeks. … We have to add to our group, we understand that.”
The Broncos would like to add the 49ers quarterback, but his contract has been the stumbling block. Kaepernick, who visited Broncos’ general manager John Elway at his Denver home, has refused to restructure his contract and the 49ers do not want to be on the hook for part of his salary, which has created a stalemate.
Kubiak said he believes that this draft class of quarterbacks is solid and that there is a player who can definitely come to Denver and push either Sanchez or Siemian.
But for now, Kubiak said he was confident Sanchez could learn the system and that Siemian “absolutely” would play a role and contend for the starting job.
The Broncos lost both Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler after winning Super Bowl 50. Manning retired and Osweiler signed a $72 million deal with the Houston Texans.
