Nate Sudfeld’s 18-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds remaining capped a wild fourth quarter as the Washington Redskins defeated the New York Jets 22-18 on Friday night.

Colt McCoy threw two touchdown passes to Rashad Ross for the Redskins, who played without several starters, including quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Kendal Thompson’s one-handed diving catch in the right corner of the end zone put the Redskins ahead after Bryce Petty’s 42-yard bomb to Robby Anderson on the previous possession gave New York an 18-14 lead with 4:02 remaining.

Thompson also caught a two-point conversion pass from Sudfeld for a four-point lead.

McCoy finished 13 of 16 for 159 yards with both scoring tosses coming in the first half. Washington led 14-2 at halftime.

The Redskins surprisingly rested several standouts on both sides of the ball shortly before kickoff, including cornerback Josh Norman, left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver DeSean Jackson. All were healthy scratches, but lead running back Matt Jones exited in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.

New York played its first unit into the second quarter. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick went 4 of 9 for 35 yards.

Petty finished 16 of 26 for 242 yards. He started the second half surge with a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zach Sudfeld, the brother of Washington’s quarterback. Kicker Ross Martin’s 40-yard field goal cut Washington’s lead to 14-12 with 12:24 remaining.

Ross caught four passes for 58 yards.
