Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence underwent recent surgery on his back that bothered him throughout the 2015 season.

“It was something that bothered him for a lot of the year,” Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said Saturday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. “He obviously played through it, but he was dealing with it a little bit.”

Lawrence, 23, did not miss a game this season and led the Cowboys in sacks with eight, including seven in the final eight games. He recorded 55 tackles and finished second on the team with 31 quarterback pressures.

Garrett did not set a timetable on Lawrence’s recovery.

“We expect him to be back fairly soon,” Garrett said. “We’ll see. We don’t want to put it definitively, but we think he’s going to be OK.”

Lawrence is the Cowboys’ second defensive lineman to undergo postseason surgery. Defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford had surgery on his right shoulder a few days after the season ended.

Quarterback Tony Romo is expected to have offseason surgery to plate his left collarbone in an attempt to prevent future injuries.
