DenverBroncosLogoThe Denver Broncos promoted defensive backs coach Joe Woods to defensive coordinator on Tuesday.

Woods, 46, joined the Broncos in 2015 and has 25 years of coaching experience, including 13 coaching secondaries in the NFL with Denver, the Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“Joe Woods is ready for this opportunity,” newly-hired Broncos coach Vance Joseph said. “He’s been a long-time NFL assistant coach and has done great work at the secondary position. No one will outwork Joe. He’s got tremendous attention to detail as well as a lot of familiarity with our players.

“It’s his time, and he’s ready for it. I’m very excited to watch Joe grow as a coordinator.”

Under Woods, the Broncos’ secondary led the league in touchdowns over the past two seasons with seven. Denver enjoyed six interceptions returned for a touchdown and one score on a fumble recovery.

Woods replaces Wade Phillips, who left after helping lead the Broncos to a Super Bowl title last season to become the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator.

Joseph was brought in to replace coach Gary Kubiak, who announced his retirement due to health concerns after just two seasons in Denver.
