Road wins in division scarce for Broncos

A big factor in the Denver Broncos’ decline over the last three years has been there inability to win on the road within their division. Denver hasn’t won an away game against an AFC West rival since they downed the then-San Diego Chargers 17-3 on Dec. 6, 2015.

They’re 0-7 on the road within the division since then, including a 30-23 loss at Kansas City on Oct. 28. The Broncos are well aware of their problems on the road against division opponents but knowing about the problem is not the same as knowing the solution to it.

“It’s hard to win on the road in this league,” Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said. “We have to get off to a better start. That’s part of our team’s issues on the road — playing fast and winning the first quarter. This team we’re playing, they’ve won the first half by plus-53 (points) so we have to get off to a better start on Sunday to have a chance to win the game.”

Quarterback Case Keenum said it doesn’t matter where the game is being played; what matters is the Broncos taking advantage of their next opportunity to improve as a team.

“It’s the next week,” Keenum said. It’s this week and we’re trying to go 1-0 and then build on that and do it again next week.”

SERIES HISTORY: 117th regular-season meeting. Broncos elad series, 64-51-1. The Chargers blanked the Broncos 21-0 in their most recent meeting last December. The shutout stopped the Broncos consecutive game scoring streak that stood out as the second longest in NFL history.
