The Denver Broncos reached agreement on a one-year contract with veteran guard Evan Mathis on Tuesday.
The Broncos did not disclose financial terms of the deal, but reports indicated that Mathis could earn up to $4 million with incentives.
Mathis will replace Max Garcia as Denver’s starting left guard.
The two-time Pro Bowl selection is in his 11th NFL season. Mathis has played in 114 regular-season games, including 78 starts. He spent the past four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Evan Mathis is an accomplished veteran who has played at a very high level for the last several seasons,” Broncos executive vice president of football operations and general manager John Elway said. “He will immediately make our team better, and we are excited to have him as part of the Denver Broncos.”
The 33-year-old Mathis was named first-team All-Pro in 2013 and chosen for the Pro Bowl each of the past two seasons with the Eagles despite missing seven games last year with a knee injury. A left guard in Philadelphia, Mathis gave up only 5 1/2 sacks since 2011, the fewest among NFL starting guards during that period.
The Carolina Panthers picked Mathis in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft and he remained there through the 2007 season before going to Miami in 2008 and on to Cincinnati from 2008 to 2010 until he landed with the Eagles.
