Running back Frank Gore told reporters that he’d like to return to his hometown Miami Dolphins in 2019.
“The goal is to come back one more year,” the 35-year-old Gore said, via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “I’ll see who wants me. Hopefully the Dolphins can re-sign me — that would be big. But you know how the business goes.”
Gore resides fourth all-time on the NFL’s rushing list with 14,748 yards in 14 NFL seasons, trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (18,355), Walter Payton (16,726) and Barry Sanders (15,269).
A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Gore sustained a sprained foot in the second quarter of last Sunday’s 41-17 setback to the Minnesota Vikings. His injury is expected to be healed by March, which is close to when free agency is set to begin.
Gore was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his streaks of starting 122 consecutive games and playing in 126 consecutive contests.
“I want to show people I can play this game still,” Gore said. “As long as you love the game and train, it’s possible.”
Gore has rushed for a team-leading 722 yards while reeling in 12 receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown for the Dolphins (7-7), who host the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-10) on Sunday (1 p.m. ET).
Gore returned to the city where he was born and starred at the collegiate level when he signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins in March.
