The Miami Dolphins placed free safety Louis Delmas on injured reserve Tuesday after he tore the ACL in his right knee last week.

Delmas was injured during non-contact activity while covering wide receiver Ted Ginn during a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers. He tore the same ACL that was surgically repaired 10 months ago.

The veteran’s injury leaves an experience void in the Dolphins’ secondary.

“He means a lot,” Dolphins wide receiver Rishard Matthews said. “I’d say if not one of the best leaders, he is the best leader on our team.”

Carolina wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin also sustained a season-ending knee injury in the Panthers-Dolphins joint practice.
