Josh Gordon announced he was stepping away from the New England Patriots to focus on his mental well-being on Thursday but shortly after the wide receiver’s announcement, the NFL announced he was suspended indefinitely for violating terms of his reinstatement under the substance abuse policy.

In issuing the suspension, the league said: “Effective today, Josh Gordon has been returned to the Reserve/Commissioner Suspended list indefinitely for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Gordon also missed two full seasons due to suspension when he played for the Cleveland Browns and has participated in 22 games over the last five seasons.
Before getting suspended for a fifth time and fourth time due to substance abuse, Gordon tweeted he was stepping aside from playing.

“I take my mental health very seriously at this point to ensure I remain able to perform at the highest level. I have recently felt like I could have a better grasp on things mentally,” Gordon said in a statement.
With that said, I will be steeping away from the football field for a bit to focus on my mental health.”

On twitter, Gordon thanked his teammates, coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft.

Shortly after Gordon’s announcement, the Patriots released a statement to express their support.

“We support Josh Gordon in his continued efforts to focus on his health,” New England said in a statement. “His attempt to do so is a private and personal matter, which we intend to respect.”

Gordon missed the beginning of Cleveland’s training camp to get counseling for anxiety and mental health issues. He rejoined the team in three weeks and played one game before getting traded to the Patriots for a 2019 fifth-round pick.

In 11 games with New England, Gordon finished 40 receptions for 720 yards and three touchdowns.
