New Orleans Saints rookie defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, the team’s first-round pick, was carted off the field during Monday’s practice.
Rankins, who was drafted with the 12th overall pick out of Louisville, went down with an apparent injury during goal-line drills at the training camp site in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
“We’ll get an update and we’ll keep you posted, but we’re trying to get the reps in and obviously you never want to see a player go down,” head coach Sean Payton said after practice. “Hopefully the news is good.”
The 6-foot-2, 305-pound Rankins had 14 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss over his final two years at Louisville. He has been playing with the first-team defense for most of camp and was expected to be a starter as a rookie.
