PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: RB Doug Martin. Even though Martin fumbled the ball away in the final minutes on Sunday to dash the Raiders’ last real hope in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts, he gave Oakland a solid running attack in its first game without injured starter Marshawn Lynch. Martin, who twice rushed for more than 1,400 yards in a season when he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, gained 72 yards on 13 carries, including a 29-yard run, against the Colts and caught two passes for 17 yards. The Raiders must get similar production from Martin against the 49ers to help keep the pressure off quarterback Derek Carr.

GAME PLAN: Since the Raiders’ defense is allowing 31.1 points per game, the plan is for Derek Carr and the offense to score as many points as possible, but so far, that hasn’t worked out so well because Oakland is averaging only 19.7 points. However, Oakland might have some more chances this week because the 49ers are allowing 29.5 points themselves, so this could turn out to be a real shootout. Wide receiver Martavis Bryant was supposed to pick up the slack after Amari Cooper was traded to the Dallas Cowboys last week, but Bryant didn’t have a catch against the Colts. However, Carr found newcomer Brandon LaFell three times for 39 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, the Raiders didn’t have a sack last week against the Colts and Andrew Luck, but they will have to find a way to put pressure on 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard, who has been sacked 18 times and thrown seven interceptions since taking over for injured Jimmy Garoppolo. However, Oakland has only four interceptions and seven sacks in seven games this season. The Raiders also must find a way to stop to running game after allowing 222 yards rushing to the Colts last Sunday.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH

–Raiders TE Jared Cook vs. the 49ers linebackers and safeties.

Cook has become a big-time player for the Raiders the last two years, as Derek Carr’s favorite receiver has 36 receptions for 474 yards (a 13.2-yard average) and three touchdowns this season. Cook had four catches for catches for 74 yards (an 18.5-yard average) and a touchdown last week against the Colts. 49ers strong safety Jaquiski Tartt, who could see plenty of Cook on Thursday night, has one of the two interceptions the 49ers have this season.
