The Las Vegas Sands Corporation hopes to build a $1 billion domed stadium in Sin City and is looking to lure the Raiders as a tenant, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Thursday.

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis, contacted by ESPN, refused to confirm or deny the newspaper’s report that he will meet with Sands chairman and chief executive officer Sheldon Adelson on Friday. However, a Sands spokesman confirmed the scheduled meeting to ESPN.

Sands senior vice president of government relations and community development Andy Abboud told the Review-Journal that the proposed 65,000-seat stadium would be a public-private partnership.

“We are moving forward with the stadium concept with or without an NFL team,” Abboud said Thursday. “We see a lot more opportunities — conference championships, bowl games, NFL exhibition football, boxing, soccer, neutral site games, and music festivals. There is an entire segment out there.”

The facility would be built on 42 vacant acres purchased recently by UNLV across from McCarron International Airport. The university reportedly is looking for a new home for its football team, which has played in Sam Boyd Stadium since 1971.

The Sands company owns the Palazzo and Venetian hotels in Las Vegas.

The Raiders recently were turned down by the NFL in their bid to move from Oakland back to Los Angeles.

After the league announced its decision, Oakland continued to discuss new stadium plans, while Texas billionaire Red McCombs, former owner of the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Vikings, lobbied for the Raiders to move to San Antonio.
