Linebacker Fred Warner, a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Draft out of BYU, has signed a four-year contract, the team announced on Wednesday.

The 6-3, 236-pound Warner, the first of the 49ers’ two third-round picks (70th overall), played in 49 games (42 starts) in four years at BYU and registered 264 tackles, 32 tackles for losses, 6.5 sacks, seven interceptions (two for touchdowns), five fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and 13 passes defensed.

Warner, who was a team captain as a senior, played in all 13 games during each of his last three seasons with the Cougars and his seven career interceptions rank second in school history among linebackers.

The 21-year-old native of San Marcos, Calif., played at Mission Hills High School.
