–A matchup with the Denver Broncos means a trip down memory lane for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan even though he’s never been employed by the organization.

But Mike Shanahan was. Multiple times, in fact.

“I moved there three different times,” son said of dad becoming the Broncos’ receivers coach in 1984 (before leaving to be head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders), their offensive coordinator in 1990 (before leaving to be offensive coordinator of the 49ers) and their head coach in 1995. “My whole life, I moved a lot. I never moved anywhere longer than four years, but I’ve always gone back to Denver.

“That’s where all my friends were growing up. That’s where my wife is from. I moved back there my freshman year of high school after leaving there in sixth grade. Just going through that run in high school, they won their first Super Bowl my senior year in high school, which was real neat.”

When the ultimate book of NFL trivia is written, Shanahan says the author would be mistaken to leave out his name.

“That was back when they didn’t have wireless cords,” he said of NFL coaches’ headsets in the 1990s. “I was always the cord boy, holding my dad’s cords, which got made fun of a lot for it, but it was neat to be up-front and personal with everything.

“The last guy to hold cords for a coach in the Super Bowl was me, if you want a good trivia question. After that Green Bay Super Bowl, they went wireless the next year. I think they only won one more because they didn’t have as good of a cord-holder, is what I always tell my dad.

“That stuff was really fun, and even though you’re not a part of it, you feel like it as a kid. Just being close with everybody and all the players and coaches. I loved Colorado.”

Mike Shanahan was been rumored to be on Green Bay’s wish list to be the Packers’ next coach. Is there a potential reunion or rivalry in the future?

“I think that window has passed for him,” son admitted.

–Like most players who get popped with drug suspensions, 49ers long snapper Kyle Nelson vowed this week not to go down without a fight after being informed by the NFL of a 10-game ban.

“I have been taking the same supplements for my entire time with the 49ers, while undergoing often simultaneous testing by the NFL with no issues,” he scripted in a written statement. “I do not deviate from my nutrition routine, and I would never knowingly take a banned substance.

“I am currently having the supplements tested, and I hope to uncover the cause of the positive test. When the product is identified, I fully intend to seek legal action against the manufacturer to protect against this happening to other players in the future.”

Nelson reportedly got a 10-game penalty because he is a repeat offender.

The 49ers on Wednesday signed Colin Holba to be their replacement long snapper.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “We’ll see. I’m just happy that he’s doing better, good enough to be back in the building. I just got to see him a little bit in meetings today, so we’ll see him out at practice today and see where he’s at, how he looks, and we’ll decide as the week goes.” — 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, indicating top wideout Marquise Goodwin won’t just walk back into a starting spot upon his return from a two-game absence to deal with personal issues.

BY THE NUMBERS: 16 — The number of years since the Broncos and 49ers have met in the San Francisco Bay Area. The 49ers were the designated home team in the 2010 meeting in London.
